FINE PAIR OF BRONZE SCONCES BY MITCHELL VANCE & CO. In every way exceeding expectations, this very fine pair of gilt bronze sconces is a testament to the fine casting skill developed on this side of the Atlantic during the 19th century. The firm of Mitchell, Vance & Co. Was founded in 1845 and by the end of the century had become a leader in the lighting and bronze accessories business, operating with over 600 workmen at their foundry in New York City by the end of the century. The present pair feature a classical Bachanalia scene with the mask of a male surrounded by grapes of the vine and flourishes of twisting acanthus and ribbon beneath four acanthus wrapped branches that raise single candles.A large cartouche of intricately cast grape leaves on chaotic vines raises above each figure, affixed verso with a pair of cast screws. Both perfect examples of flawless casting skill, a powerful pair that were intended as an allegory of prosperity, an appropriate gesture in the entryway of a fine classical home. Today such flourishes are difficult to come by, particularly in the inordinately fine original condition exhibited in both.
