FINE PAIR OF BRONZE SCONCES BY MITCHELL VANCE & CO. In every way exceeding expectations, this very fine pair of gilt bronze sconces is a testament to the fine casting skill developed on this side of the Atlantic during the 19th century. The firm of Mitchell, Vance & Co. Was founded in 1845 and by the end of the century had become a leader in the lighting and bronze accessories business, operating with over 600 workmen at their foundry in New York City by the end of the century.

The present pair feature a classical Bachanalia scene with the mask of a male surrounded by grapes of the vine and flourishes of twisting acanthus and ribbon beneath four acanthus wrapped branches that raise single candles. A large cartouche of intricately cast grape leaves on chaotic vines raises above each figure, affixed verso with a pair of cast screws. Both perfect examples of flawless casting skill, a powerful pair that were intended as an allegory of prosperity, an appropriate gesture in the entryway of a fine classical home. Today such flourishes are difficult to come by, particularly in the inordinately fine original condition exhibited in both.

21 H x 13 1/4 W x 7 1/2 D (dimensions approximate). Condition Report: Electricity untested - as always all wiring should be checked by a professional prior to installation. Gilding in exquisite condition, probably original. Please scroll down to view all detailed images of this piece.
