The present pair feature a classical Bachanalia scene with the mask of a male surrounded by grapes of the vine and flourishes of twisting acanthus and ribbon beneath four acanthus wrapped branches that raise single candles. A large cartouche of intricately cast grape leaves on chaotic vines raises above each figure, affixed verso with a pair of cast screws. Both perfect examples of flawless casting skill, a powerful pair that were intended as an allegory of prosperity, an appropriate gesture in the entryway of a fine classical home. Today such flourishes are difficult to come by, particularly in the inordinately fine original condition exhibited in both.21 H x 13 1/4 W x 7 1/2 D (dimensions approximate).
