They at one time were candle sconces. Estate had them altered to take electric lighting.
You could take them back to orig with a tad bit of work. There were holes drilled in the bottom of the curl of shell where the arms were attached so wires could go thru and the candle cups were altered to hold the electric fittings and little holes for the wires to come out that were then wired to the arms so they would not show when hanging. The candle arms themselves are gilt metal as are the tiny leaves the cups and the rest of the sconce is carved gilt wood. There are small strips of wood attached to the backs of the sconces to hold the wires in place in 2 grooves that were carved into the backs to hold wires. Please look carefully and if you have any doubts please ask. They do work fine they have inline switches and long cords.
